On Mr WS,

by Roger Jenkins

When I consider, Mr Shakespeare, how

your legacy lives on far-flung stages,

your plays command attention, even now,

your characters call across the ages.

Round the Globe, actors make familiar

the Forest of Arden, historic Rome,

Agincourt, Thebes, 12th Night’s Illyri-a,

inns, ships, castles. No wonder we’re at home

within your world! We recognise the truth

of tragedy-comedy drawn so well -

it holds the ear of ev’ry age, forsooth:

love, war, honour, poised ‘twixt heaven and hell.

Considering this, I rejoice, oh yes -

there’s never been anyone like WS!
