Wit & Wisdom

These are some of my favourite books which have provided me with the basis of many of the stories in my repertoire.  It's important to remember when reading a folktale - as opposed to hearing it told - that a writer usually has very different concerns than a teller. A lot of folktales for example, make great use of repetition, but this can get very tiresome when read on a page.  Tellers use actions, gestures, facial expressions and sounds to supply a lot of information while a writer turns to adjectives and relies on description.  So while I've managed to write out the Cinderella story in only 153 words, most book vewrsions would make it a lot longer. Don't be put off by the length of a tale in a book!
