We owe our start as a tandem act to Mrs Nathan, the First Lady, who was invited to be GOH at an event organised by the Asian Storytelling Congress in 2001. As a former teacher at the School for the Deaf, Mrs Nathan knew how effective deaf tellers are through sign and gesture. She suggested that a deaf teller be included in the line-up. I was asked to find one - and that’s how Dennis and I began.
I’ve known Dennis Tan for more than 20 years since I first became involved with the hearing-impaired community in 1984.
He taught me sign language - he still teaches me sign! - and we worked on his book, Singapore’s first sign dictionary, together.
Apart from conducting programmes and performances at the School for the Deaf, we’ve performed at community events.
