Watch THE RED BALLOON (1956) by Albert Lamorrisse. One of those clasic films you see in childhood and never forget.
Hardly a word is spoken, but the music/visuals say it all.
The movie runs 38 minutes and is split into 3 parts on youtube:
My son cried when he saw it aged 5 or 6, but now (he’s in P3) while there’s sadness, the final balloon ride over Paris is something to look forward too and excites his imagination.  He saw me linking to the youtube and was insistent on watching it!
1) Valloton’s wonderful painting of the child chasing the runaway balloon reminds me of THE RED BALLOON (see below.)

2) If the child runs away from its parents (so far away in the picture) what might happen?  Tell the story of The Gunniwolf!

3) Paintings are a terrific stimulus for making up stories, providing character (portrait) setting or an incident. I’ve suggested lots of ways here you can get you - and your class - started on creating original stories.
