World Storytelling

We’re lucky in Singapore to have hosted so many wonderful storytellers in the past decade -

Margaret Read MacDonald who inspired me and introduced me to so many stories and creative ways of telling;

Eth-No-Tec, with whom I’ve told alongside here and in Manila, for their image-rich kinetic tandem telling;

Fran Stallings, whose performance of Shingebiss and the North Wind is one of my top three goose-bump raising tales;

Cathy Spagnoli, who I appeared with at the Longman’s Storytelling conference in Hong Kong, whose books are a model for tellers and teachers alike

Dianne Ferlatte for her magnetic presence, Antonio Rocha, a Brazilian who came to telling via mime, who saw me tell Don’t Eat Your Little Sister and kindly asked if he could create his own version;  Dan Yashinsky for The Master of the Tea Ceremony tale;
World Storytelling Day (WSD) is celebrated annually on 20th March (or a weekend thereabouts!) by storytellers in communities around the world. The theme for 2012 is TREES.  I’ll update you once my plans are finalised.

For 2011, I organised a major celebration here as the theme was WATER, and WSD coincided with World Water Day, celebrated by the PUB. Chuah Ai Lin and Dolly Leow helmed a programme at Lower Seletar Reservoir, while I did one at Sengkang Floating Wetland. In the evening, we were joined by Jeeva Raghunath at a fund-raising show for the Singapore Environment Council.
