(Before I start the story I usually hand out 3 coloured flowers – one to a kid at the front, one to the middle and one to a kid at the back of the audience, so I can walk thru the forest as I collect/sing.
For ‘flowers’ I’ve used different coloured pencil cases, marker pens .. whatever was to hand. I’m not sure it’s an upgrade to use artificial flowers, but as I cd get three pretty ones for a dollar in Chiangmai I did!)
Once there was a little girl who lived at the edge of the forest. Every day, her mom said to her, "Little Girl, don't you go near the jungle, because if you do, the Gunniwolf's going to get you!"
"Yes, Mom, I know! I won't go near the jungle." And she never did.
One day, that little girl's mom said, "Little Girl, I have to go to the supermarket. Now, while I'm gone, you may play inside the house, or behind the house, or in front of the house. But remember: don't go near the jungle, because if you do, the Gunniwolf's going to get you!"
And that little girl said, "Yes, Mom, I know. I won't go near the jungle!"
Her mom went shopping. While she was gone, the little girl played inside the house, behind the house and in front of the house. She saw some beautiful flowers, growing right at the edge of the forest.
"Oooh!" she said. "Those (colour) flowers would look beautiful on the dining table!" So she went and picked them. And as she picked them, she sang a little song: (SONG – make up your own little tune!): Kum-ki, kum-kwa, Kum-ki, kum-kwa Kum-ki, kum-kwa.
(I make a thing of looking for the gunniwolf every time, but I get confused and he’s the sunny bunny honey money funny wolf - the kids correct me raucously!)
Then she saw some lovely pink flowers, growing just inside the forest.
"Oooh!" she said. "Those pink flowers would look really nice with (colour #1) flowers!" So she went INTO THE JUNGLE … and she picked them.
(Sing song)
Then she saw some gorgeous red flowers, growing RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FOREST!
"Oooh! Those red flowers would go really well with (other) flowers!" So she went picked them. (SING SONG – maybe a little nervously ‘cos you’re right in the middle of the dark forest?)
Just then, right in front of her, she saw - the Gunniwolf!
"Little girl! Why do you move?"
"I’m not moving!!"
"Then sing your little song again!"
So the little girl sang: (sing song)
And the Gunniwolf went fast asleep!
So the little girl went tippy-toe, tippy-toe, tippy-toe away from the Gunniwolf.
But the Gunniwolf woke up! And chased her! Hunka-cha! Hunka-cha! Hunka-cha! (whatever sound a mean old gunniwolf makes as it goes galumphing through the forest!)
"Little girl! Why do you move?"
"I’m not moving!!"
"Then sing your little song again!" (sing the song – ask the kids to help you sing because you’re so nervous and you really really do want wolf to go to sleep!)
(I usually do this 3 times at each of the places where I picked the flowers. Finally after I sing song the 3rd time:)
But the Gunniwolf did not go to sleep, so she tried again: (sing the song)
And the Gunniwolf went fast asleep.
So the little girl went tippy-toe, tippy-toe, tippy-toe... tippy-toe, tippy-toe, tippy-toe away from the Gunniwolf.
And the Gunniwolf never did wake up!
So if you ever go near that jungle, remember to sing that little song, and the Gunniwolf will never, ever, ever get you! And that's that.
