Dramastarter is a modular programme that provides a practical, age-appropriate approach to creative drama-in-education.
Dramastarter draws on a variety of text types (eg narrative, poem, personal account) to explore the ways in which elements of a story - character, setting, conflict and resolution - combine to create narrative. Depending on the level of the participants, a variety of techniques – such as mime, mask, puppetry, and the use of scripted texts – may be introduced.
There is always a voice component in Dramastarter, as enhancing communication skills through clear and expressive use of language is a major objective.
As STELLAR requires a more interactive and child-centred approach to lower primary teaching, I believe creative drama has a significant role to play in the classroom, which I demonstrate in my popular teacher’s guides, THE DRAMA TOOLKIT
At the end of the course students will be able to:
generate their own scenes, or to create a drama from a supplied source (eg folk tale, fairy tale, poem, photograph)
Understand the importance of the 4 W’s – who, where, what and why?
OBJECTIVES
The emphasis is on using drama-in-education techniques to foster both an appreciation of drama and personal development .
UNDERSTANDING DRAMA:
To lay the age-appropriate foundations for drama work.
To make participants more aware of drama through the interaction of characters, setting and events manifested in dialogue and action.
To begin understanding the different ways drama can tell a story – including mime, puppetry, gesture, mask, dialogue, improvisation.
Depending on the age and duration of the course, to introduce drama arising from informal (improvised) and formal (scripted) pretexts
To foster greater appreciation of literature through using a rich variety of fables, folktales, poems, stories and factual accounts.
