This is an exciting introduction to the commedia dell’arte made with two award-winning commedia performers - MARCO LULY and LUCIANA CODISPOTI from Rome’s celebrated Luoghi dell’arte theatre company.
SPIRIT OF COMMEDIA is a 65 minute film that combines performance footage with studio demonstration and Marco and Luciana in conversation with myself. As an arts educator and former IB Theatre Arts examiner, I know many of the questions students want to ask about this unique theatrical style.
The film is in ENGLISH with some scenes in Italian
Designed specifically for theatre arts students, it provides
vivid demonstrations of the stock characters in action;
the use of traditional hand-crafted leather masks;
two extracts from The Servant of Two Masters (in Italian)
a couple of improvisations;
monologues by Pantalone (in love!) and Ricciolina, a servant who comically mimics the actions of her masters (in Italian)
and scenes from a lazzo of eating oneself!
In conversation, Marco and Luciana discuss the origins of the commedia, the essence of improvisation, the role of Goldoni, working with masks, Arlecchino’s costume and why (and how) commedia is flourishing today.
Marco has visited Singapore many times - almost annually! - since 1994, running masterclasses at NAFA, LaSalle, UWC, ACJC, VJC, Tanglin Trust, The American School among others.
